Give tools TLC before springtime
While it's not quite time to pack away garden tools and equipment for the winter, it's not too soon to start taking care of them. Whether you have deluxe tools or inexpensive ones, given tender loving care, they will last longer.
Follow these tips for keeping your tools, equipment and garden pots in great shape.
Wooden handles
Wipe off the handle using little if any water. Use fine sandpaper to smooth the surface. Wipe off the dust and rub generously with linseed oil. After about 30 minutes, wipe off any excess oil.
Examine all wooden tool handles for splits and cracks. Small cracks on hoes, shovels, rakes and spade handles may be repaired by wrapping it with sports equipment tape. If the crack is deep, however, replace the handle, particularly pick or ax handles.
Rusty tools
Remove dirt with a damp cloth or metal brush. Scrub away the rust with steel wool or a scouring pad. For heavily rusted metal, a solvent such as lighter fluid may be needed. Finally, wipe off the metal and apply a thin coat of oil.
