Drought, stress on trees continue to get worse
City and county parks departments, landscapers and tree service companies have all been working overtime this year to battle the negative effects of the drought. Grant Crowell with Sugar Land-based Urban Foresters Tree Service company said that his business has see an increase in calls related to dead trees.
“It’s given people a heightened awareness of their trees. We’re certified arborists and more geared towards helping people save trees. We have people asking us ways they can make their trees healthier,” Crowell said. “Some of our residential and commercial land developers have asked us how they can preserve the trees during this time. Unfortunately, we do cut down a lot of dead trees too.”
Non-native trees, pine trees and trees farther east are under the most stress according to Crowell. Trees in eastern parts of the state and even in the Houston-area are more used to rain than those farther west and thus endure more stress when they receive less water.
