On a quiet Thursday morning last week, a gentleman pushed a
dusty Hoover "Windtunnel" upright vacuum cleaner through the front
door at the Good Housekeeping Vacuum Shop on East Cedar Avenue.
"When it's working, I love it," said local resident Ron Emes.
"They just seem to break. I'm not a vacuum man. I've learned in the
past, rather than me trying to fix it, I'll bring it in to someone
who knows."
CLOGGED WITH DOG HAIR
The vacuum man who knows is Kim McGuire, the store owner, who
has worked in the shop since he was 17 years old.
He first apprenticed under the direction of his father, E.J.
"Lucky" McGuire, who died in 2001. Since then, he has been learning
on his own.
"It's clogged," said McGuire, after one quick look at the
machine. "They're all clogged; it doesn't matter what kind of
vacuum."
Emes explained he has a big dog, "as you can see from all the
hair," a common plight for vacuums up here where there are lots of
animals, McGuire added.
