Hodala Carbon SSCX
Some ‘cross racers may think this is too nice of a bike to be a singlespeed, but I came to appreciate the Hodala SSCX for exactly that reason, even when I raced against folks on chain-driven bikes. Raleigh built the bike around the redesigned Gates CenterTrack Carbon Belt Drive System, a carbon-strand belt and cog that replaces your standard drivetrain. The weight savings are significant: The belt and two sprockets weigh less than a standard chain by itself.
The belt drive is also smooth, silent, and never slips, even when you’re powering through deep sand or up steep climbs. The CenterTrack carbon belt has a center channel that keeps the belt in place by mating it to a ridge on the sprockets. This new design also means it effectively sheds mud and debris, and is less sensitive to misalignment. Gates says their belts will last two to three times longer than a chain, and there’s virtually no maintenance, just blast it with a hose and go on your way.
